Auchentoshan 1978, 18 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.80% 8 This seems to me the definitive light tasting (triple-distilled) Lowlander. In theory, such whiskies mature young, but this has aged beautifully.

Chieftain's Choice Banff 1978, Sherry Wood
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 7 Too burnt and dry. Not for everyone. Reminds me of a particular espresso and grappa, standing outside the Arsenale, on a winter's morning.

Duncan Taylor Inverleven 26 Years Old, Cask 1873
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.10% 8 An interesting character. Much sweeter on the palate than expected from the nose. Water brings out an unpleasant cardboardy touch.

Glencadam 1978 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Good, but for me just lacks the extra layer of complexity to lift it to the next level.

Single Malt - Scotland - 57.60% 7 Decently balanced.

Gordon & MacPhail Aberfeldy 1978
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 8 Delicate but not bland. Real subtlety. Very mature, but not a hint of wood. A Highlander, but blindfold I would have placed it as a Speysider.

Single Malt - Scotland - 54.60% 7 Another evolution in the Port Ellen saga. Less austere but also less overtly smoky. Fascinating.

Single Malt - Scotland - 60.50% 9 Pungent, powerful and appetising. A dram for the Islay-lover and connoisseur. This distillery should be revived.

Signatory Aberfeldy 1978
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00% 7 Less structure than the youthful version from the distillery or the more mature choice, but enjoyable in its own right. As a dessert malt with trifle?

Single Malt - Scotland - 59.70% 7 More woody and astringent than earlier bottlings at similar ages.

Single Malt - Scotland - 59.00% 8 More body and richness than the '79. Still not a great warrior but a hearty fisherman.

Single Malt - Scotland - 58.00% 8 Typical fragrant, alert Port Ellen, but the port finish lends more fruit and an amazing orangey-pinkish colour.
