1991 vintage whiskies

Adelphi Shannon Grain 1991, 9 Years Old, Cask 10839
Single Grain - Ireland - 67.30%
6 For a grain whiskey, it has plenty of flavours, but they do not hang together very well.

Berry's Own Selection Glencadam 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A pleasant freshener. Delivers a lot. To be enjoyed on a warm day with raw fish and salad.

Berry's Own Selection Glencadam 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
7 A dram for a sweet tooth. Nearly sugary. Unbalanced.

Berry's Own Selection Mortlach
- Scotland - 56.40%
7 A 70s playboy...all mirrored shades, suede jacket,woody aftershave and cigar.

Bowmore 16 Years Old Port Matured
Single Malt - - 53.10%
7 Substantial and well balanced (bar that perfumed note).

Chieftain's Choice Rosebank 1991 Sherry Finish, 11 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 An attractive medium-bodied Rosebank. The sherry finish has added complexity to delicacy. Some exotic notes which makes it really appetising.

Connoisseur's Choice Clynelish 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 Well-balanced and complex as a Clynelish should be. A good, solid afterdinner dram.

Connoisseur's Choice Lochside 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 Never a classic, but the closure of a distillery is a loss. Lochside was a pleasant whisky, and now it is a collector's item.

Cooper's Choice Bruichladdich 1991, 12 Years Old, Portwood
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Very appetising. Long, lingering.

Cooper's Choice Caol Ila 1991, 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A perfectly decent dram, but just lacks the required interaction between wood and spirit.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Cooper's Choice Glenlivet 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 A delicious afterdinner malt.

Dewar Rattray Bowmore 1991, 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.60%
7 Old Bowmore is fascinating: it either becomes light and tropical with no smoke or reduces into this anchovy like concentration.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

Dewar Rattray Bruichladdich 1991, 12 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00%
8 Savoury. Summery. A picnic malt. Or eating freshly shucked oysters with Jim McEwan.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Dewar Rattray Caol Ila 1991, 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.70%
8 Fishy yet sweet. Kipper crumble in a hospital anyone?

Evan Williams 1991, Single Barrel
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 43.30%
8 Where did she go? Will she return?

Glen Moray Mountain Oak The Final Release
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.60%
7 More of a whisky spread than a drink. For those with a sweet tooth.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

Glenfiddich 1991 Vintage Reserve
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
8 Gentle. Accessible. Enjoyable.

Gordon & MacPhail Bladnoch 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.80%
7 The nose is unusual, closer to a sour Chinese broth than a whisky! But the palate restores an expected floral Lowland freshness.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Gordon & MacPhail Caol Ila 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.40%
8 What you nose is what you get. A beautiful uncompromising version of Caol Ila. More enjoyable when neat.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Lagavulin Distillers Edition 1991
- Scotland - 43.00%
8 Peat and iodine are not all. There's got to be texture and complexity. And this one has got it all.

Lombard Springbank 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00%
8 Jumps and bites. This is the young Springbank, not yet the mature sophisticate.

Magilligan 1991 Limited Edition, Sherry Wood Finish
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 Finishing Cooley's peated malt in a sherry wood for a year works a lot better than I imagined, and makes me wonder what an unpeated malt would taste like after a year in Jerez.

Magilligan 1991 Sherry Wood Finish
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 I liked the lively 8 Years Old version. Would I be tempted away by something smoother, more mature? I would think about it...maybe.

Master of Malt Cragganmore 20 Years Old, 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.20%
7 An unexpectedly light (but well balanced) Cragganmore.

Master of Malt North British 1991 20 Years Old
Single Grain - Scotland - 55.80%
7 It might lack the layering you want from a 20 year old but its vibrancy is to be praised.

Mercian Single Cask, 1991

Old Malt Cask Bowmore 1991, 12 Years Old

Old Malt Cask Caol Ila 1991, 12 Years Old

Single Malt - Scotland - 58.70%
7 The Laddie in austere mood. Best before dinner.

Private Collection Imperial 1991 Port Wood Finish

7 Balanced fresh and delicious.

8 Saves all the action for the finish. Very appetising.

Signatory Caol Ila 1991, Port Wood
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 I would like to try this with lamb.

Smoked Sausages Islay 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 It's young and seems to have been too heavily reduced.

Springbank Rum Wood, 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.20%
7 Almost as if it is still coming together.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

The Dalmore 1991, Madeira Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00%
8 The wine smoothes but it is not there yet. Too young? Not enough finishing? It should have gone back to sleep.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

The Glenrothes 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 Big and powerful but with sufficient character to cope. Another cracker from Rothes.

Wemyss Vintage Malts Apples and Pears 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A strange package that almost works.

Yamazaki 1991 Bourbon Cask
Single Malt - Japan - 60.00%
7 An interesting interplay of flavours. Comes to rather an abrupt halt.

Yamazaki 1991 Sherry Cask
Single Malt - Japan - 61.00%
7 Can the elegant Yamazaki whisky stand up to heavy sherry? In this case, yes. A dexterously balanced malt.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Yoichi 1991, Cask No 129504
Single Malt - Japan - 64.00%
8 Another outdoor drink combining estery elegancy and phenolic pungency. High strength must be monitored with water.
