Ballantine's, the Chivas Brothers brand known for its blended Scotch whiskies, has release its first single grain whisky. Ballantine's Single Distillery is made using wheat grain whiskies from Strathclyde Distillery, which for years has been the source of whiskies used in Ballantine's blends.
The new release has been selectively finished in rum casks, to bring exotic notes, and extra-charred American oak casks. The brand says the combination of the double-cask finish and Strathclyde's "fruity and floral" whisky creates a taste profile with notes of peach, charred pineapple, apples, and toasted almonds.
Master blender Sandy Hyslop commented: "One of the things I enjoy most about my job as master blender is to be able to experiment and continue to push boundaries, just like our founder George Ballantine, who was doing things his own way and breaking conventional codes of whisky as far back as 1827.
"Ballantine’s Single Distillery was created to challenge perceptions of grain whisky and offers a whisky that really showcases the quality of the grain used. The addition of the double-cask finish results in an exceptionally smooth Scotch, making for a refined drinking experience to savour during those finer moments in life."
Earlier this year, Ballantine's released two new editions in its True Music Icons collection, paying tribute to John Lennon and Elton John. Also to the tune of music-inspired releases, the brand collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan frontman RZA for its 7 American Barrel release.
Ballantine's Single Distillery (40% ABV) is a permanent addition to Ballantine's portfolio. It will be available from November 2024, and the RRP will vary by market.
