For those interested in winning the rare bottle, a donation of £5 has been asked for to Big Peat’s raffle via Douglas Laing's website, with donations closing today and the winner to selected at random very soon. At the time of writing, donations have surpassed £3,000.
The Ukraine’s Humanitarian Appeal belongs to the Disaster Emergency Committee, and aims to provide essentials such as food, water, shelter, and medical assistance to families fleeing the ongoing conflict.
The bottle is designed in Ukrainian blue and yellow colours, with print finishes and a yellow wax dip seal. It’s said that Big Peat’s earthy-coloured artwork has been muted to grey in order to symbolise respect and solidarity. Bottled at 48.1% ABV without colouring or chill-filtration, the producer has described the spirit as having notes of warm sand, phenols and peated barley balanced by a caramel sweetness.
Cara Laing, Marketing Director, said the following on the free raffle from Big Peat’s: “The Douglas Laing team have been watching the humanitarian disaster in Ukraine and wanted to do something to help. We tasked Fred Laing with creating a very special bottling (just one bottle) of Big Peat containing particularly rare and old Single Malts - 99% of which are from the legendary Port Ellen Distillery. We now hope Whisky enthusiasts are excited by both the exceptional spirit and the chance to help our friends in Ukraine.”
Big Peat's are no strangers to commendable charitable work, having previously announced a donation of sanitiser to British armed forces charity Erskine worth £10,000.
