Boann Distillery has released a collection of three single pot still Irish whiskeys. The collection is the first from the brand to be released worldwide.
The Marsala, Medeira, and Pedro Ximénez releases join the company’s Whistler whiskey brand under the Boann umbrella.
Boann founder and managing director Pat Cooney sees the release as part of a larger goal for the family-run brand. “This is the beginning of a journey to bring Irish whiskey back to where it once was, to a time when Ireland dominated the world whiskey market,” he said.
“It is amazing to bring this project to fruition, single pot still Irish whiskey is the quintessential Irish whiskey style and exclusive and sacred to Ireland.
“Our vision is to revive the heritage laid down by the lost distilleries of Ireland, distilling these historic mashbills (recipes) with local ingredients and uniting the past with the future of the craft of Irish whiskey distillation by using the latest technology.”
Boann was awarded World’s Best New Make and Young Spirit in the 2021 World Whiskies Awards — the same spirit was the base used for the three new releases, now divided by cask type.
The Pedro Ximénez release was aged in casks sourced from the distillery’s partner cooperage in Andalucía, Spain, some of which had previously been part of a vintage Pedro Ximénez solera system.
For the Madeira expression, Boann used casks from Madeira house Justino’s. The Marsala release began in ex-bourbon barrels, before a finish in Marsala casks.
Cooney added: “We are creating whiskeys of distinct character and provenance and are writing the next chapter in the fascinating story of single pot still Irish whiskey.
“It is a source of immense pride that in doing so, we have distilled the essence of the land around us.”
All three expressions are bottled at 47% ABV and currently available via Boann’s website at RRP €69.95. The collection will roll out in Ireland and internationally over the coming weeks.
