The Cockburns Founder's Reserve was blended using a high proportion of the distillery's single malt whisky, which has been matured in Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine casks, first- and second-fill bourbon casks, and oloroso sherry butts. The whisky is lightly peated and bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration.
Cockburns of Leith was founded in 1796 by wine and spirits merchant Robert Cockburn, and counts Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens and King George IV among its former customers. Annandale Distillery, located in Dumfries and Galloway, boasts a similarly long history; originally founded in 1836 by excise officer George Donald, it is one of Scotland's oldest operating distilleries. It was closed in 1921 and remained dormant until husband-and-wife team Prof David Thomson and Teresa Church formed the Annandale Distillery Company in 2007 and invested £12.5 million to refurbish and reopen the distillery. It now produces the Man O'Words and Man O'Sword single malt Scotch whiskies.
Keith Murray, director of Cockburns of Leith, said: “We are delighted to introduce our new Cockburns of Leith Founder’s Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky as a first expression launch in partnership with the Annandale Distillery. When you taste a dram, you truly experience the malt craftsmanship behind the blend with the influence of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine barrels and oloroso sherry butts delivering a depth and complexity that we believe is exceptional.”
David Ashton-Hyde, commercial director and general manager of Annandale Distillery, said: “Since opening our new on-site bottling and blending hall we’ve had the privilege of working with some inspiring people and exciting companies. Working with Cockburns of Leith to bring their Founder’s Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky to life has been a joyous experience. The rich histories of both Annandale Distillery and Cockburns of Leith, coupled with the passion of our teams, has yielded a stunning blend and fabulous brand."
