It's been an exciting week in the whisky world — the winners of the World Whiskies Awards 2025 were announced, a yearly calendar highlight that celebrates the excellent whiskies being made around the world. Fittingly, it was also International Whisky Day on Thursday 27 March.

With all the excitement — and the promise of a little spring sun here in the UK — it's the perfect opportunity to relax with a fresh, citrusy cocktail. It's not certain that the New York Sour was actually created in its eponymous city (it's thought it could have originated in 1880s Chicago), but if you'd like to double down on the New York inspiration, try swapping out the bourbon or rye for a New York whiskey like Little Rest, by Tenmile Distillery. As a bonus, the Little Rest range was named World's Best Design this year in the World Whiskies Awards.

Ingredients:

60ml bourbon or rye whiskey
22.5ml simple syrup
30ml fresh lemon juice
15ml egg white (optional)
15ml red wine (Shiraz or Malbec)

Method:

Pour the whiskey, syrup, lemon juice, and egg white (if using) into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake vigorously. Strain into chilled rocks glass filled with ice. Float the wine on top. Garnish with lemon or orange zest and cherry.
