Scotch whisky blending house Compass Box has unveiled the final release in its Extinct Blends Quartet, Celestial.
The new blend, inspired by some of the now-coveted bottlings of peated Scotch from the 1950s and 1960s, combines malt whiskies from the likes of Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Pulteney, and Glen Elgin distilleries for a rich peated profile.
Celestial's label draws inspiration from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology, with a dramatic cloudscape and glittering constellations.
Launched in August 2022, Compass Box's Extinct Blends series aimed to highlight the flavours of 'forgotten blends'. The inaugural release was Ultramarine (inspired by a 'deluxe' blended Scotch whisky first released in the 1980s), followed by Delos in January 2023 (which was inspired by Compass Box's best-selling blend Asyla), and Metropolis in September 2023 (an homage to the 'bustling cities' that have played a part in the history of blended whisky).
James Saxon, the whisky maker behind Celestial and recently appointed whisky-making director of Compass Box, said: “We wanted to conclude the Extinct Blends Quartet with a truly ambitious blend, and Celestial is the perfect liquid to close this chapter in the Compass Box story.”
Compass Box's Celestial will be available from 4 April in a limited release of 5,532 bottles. More information can be found at compassboxwhisky.com.
Earlier this year, Compass Box announced the transition of its groundbreaking Hedonism expression to an annual limited release, alongside the launch of a film about the history of the blended grain whisky brand.
