Michter's Sour Mash
At Whisky.Auction, the top-selling lot in the November auction was Michter's Celebration Sour Mash 2016, a blend of straight bourbon and straight rye whiskies aged between 10 and 30 years. The bottle was donated to raise funds for Equal Measures, a charity which aims to promote diversity and inclusion in the drinks industry through awareness, support, education, and mentorship. The bottling sold for a final price of £9,600.
Coming up...
Currently the oldest whisky in the world and in a truly striking presentation, the Macallan Time:Space set the whisky world alight when it was launched earlier this year. It appears at auction for the first time in Whisky Auctioneer’s November auction, alongside more than 1,000 bottles from the iconic Speyside distillery. These include entries from the Fine and Rare series, 1930s and ’40s Italian imports, anniversary malts, and vintage Gran Reserva bottlings.
Celtic Heartlands was a range of bottlings from former Bruichladdich master distiller, Jim McEwan, produced by Murray McDavid. They include names from high-profile distilleries including Macallan, Highland Park, and Bowmore as well as lesser-seen names such as Tomatin. The metalwork adorning the bottles takes inspiration from Celtic artwork, with intricate designs of Celtic knots, crosses and animal motifs.
Showa, christened after Emperor Hirohito, is commonly used to mean the post-war boom period of Japan. Less literal translations could also be “Enlightened Peace” or “Radiant Japan”. Japanese whisky from this time is sometimes seen as being from part of a once-overlooked golden age of whisky production: bottlings such as these from Karuizawa epitomise this. This month, four bottles from single Sherry casks from 1973 and 1974 appear at Whisky Auctioneer, all from limited releases of 250 bottles or fewer.
