The Isle of Raasay has announced its newest whisky, the result of a collaboration with single-estate distillery Arbikie. The single malt whisky has been made with barley grown at Arbikie Distillery.
The grain used was Concerto barley, grown on Arbikie's farm in Angus and distilled by Raasay in September 2019. The resulting spirit was matured in ex-Woodford Reserve rye whisky casks. Rye whisky casks regularly feature in Raasay's signature maturation style, in its ‘Na Sia’ recipe of six cask types.
Raasay says the Made with Arbikie Barley expression is a departure from its usual style; tasting notes shared by the distillery highlight flavours of banana, pine sap, and mint chocolate.
Alasdair Day, co-founder and master distiller of Isle of Raasay Distillery, commented: “The release is the culmination of years of work that began as a conversation between co-founders of two very different distilleries, but with a shared passion for creating flavoursome spirits.”
John Stirling, co-founder of Arbikie Distillery, added: “We are thrilled that our farm is partnering with Isle of Raasay Distillery. Using Arbikie’s barley ensures that every bottle of their whisky reflects the exceptional craftmanship of both our teams.
“Scottish barley is crucial in crafting authentic Scotch whisky, our climate and soil all impart distinctive flavours that are integral to the character of our spirits. Together, we are setting a new standard in the whisky industry, celebrating the finest ingredients and the dedication of our people.”
Isle of Raasay Made with Arbikie Barley (50.2% ABV, RRP £75) is a UK-exclusive release, available now via Isle of Raasay stockists.
