Japanese whisky retailer dekantā is celebrating 10 years since its founding in 2015.
Over its decade in business, dekantā has championed Japanese whisky through partnerships with distilleries and independent producers in Japan, and throughout says it has "stayed true" to its values of "authenticity, craftsmanship, and discovery".
As a result of its partnerships with whisky makers, dekantā launched its own independent bottling range in 2019. The range includes single malts and "exclusive" blended whiskies.
In 2022, dekantā partnered with Karuizawa Whisky Co to revive the Karuizawa name in spirits. The original Karuizawa Distillery was open from 1955 until being mothballed in 2000. Karuizawa Whisky Co and dekantā were granted permission to use the Karuizawa name for the new distillery in order to "honour the legacy" of Karuizawa.
Makiyo Masa, founder of dekantā, commented: “As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we reflect with gratitude on the journey we’ve taken and the community that has supported us. From our valued customers and talented partners to the incredible distilleries and artists we work with, this milestone belongs to all of you. We look forward to continuing our mission of bringing the best whiskies from Japan to the rest of the world.”
To mark the anniversary, dekantā has announced a celebratory single cask bottling. Distilled at the Wakatsura Saburomaru Distillery, the whisky has been aged for six years in a first-fill bourbon cask.
Tasting notes shared by the bottler highlight coastal smoke, toasted marshmallow, scorched herbs, crème brûlée, grilled banana, and cracked black pepper.
The Wakatsuru 10th Anniversary release is bottled at 56% ABV and is available now at RRP US$219.99 via dekantā.
