With several major international awards under its belt within just a few months of launching, J.G. Thomson’s range of small batch spirits have enjoyed a flying start.

The first batches of the Edinburgh-based blenders’ special edition whiskies have really caught the eye in particular, with its Rich 23 year old blended malt Scotch whisky (£125) earning a prestigious Outstanding Gold Award at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), and its 1972 Sweet blended grain Scotch Whisky (£189) also gaining an IWSC Gold.

Its three core blended malt Scotch whiskies – Smoky; Rich; and Sweet - have also earned acclaim, each one winning Silver at IWSC.

With its first batches gaining critical acclaim, J.G Thomson is embarking on a wave of activity to reach discerning whisky drinkers including offering Whisky Magazine readers a special discount of 10% on purchases (see details below).

In other news, J.G Thomson will be the official spirits partner at the Fringe by the Sea festival in the Scottish coastal town of North Berwick, advertising around Edinburgh, and developing further partnerships.

Known as the ‘tastemakers’, J.G. Thomson was originally a wine & spirits merchant with its roots dating back to the 1700s. It occupied the Vaults in Leith – the now home of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Its success saw them own three bonded warehouses and its own cooperage. Its whisky was exported all round the world, with the US the biggest customer. Times started to change, as did its fortunes and the last bottling was completed in Leith in 1964.

JGT Core Range

Superior quality, blending and curating is in the DNA of the business, and that mix continues today with the latest incarnation of J. G. Thomson for the 21st century, launched just last year. Building on the same founding principles, expert blenders are creating new and exciting spirit tastes in small batches for people who want an authentic experience. Its mission is to create Scotch whisky that is a little out of the ordinary, blended with discriminating taste and appeal.

Smoky Blended Malt Scotch Whisky and Sweet Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, designed to suit an eclectic range of tastes.

J.G Thomson’s Rich Blended Scotch Whisky is the darkest of the range and is a “real sherry bomb”. Its rich aroma conjures up dark raisins, black cherries, juicy sultanas, deep orange peel and toasted cocoa nibs. While the taste sees you uncover blackberries, figs, soaked currants, dried dates, dark chocolate orange and hints of nutmeg and cinnamon spice.

Its Smoky blend is made from 100% Islay malts and is designed to give “you something to chew on”. It has an aroma of burning ash, baked seaweed, barbecued fruits and that much-love Islay medicinal undertone. J.G. Thomson uses Pedro Ximenez butts and hogsheads for richness and depth and ex-bourbon barrels for sweetness and body.

Moving onto the Sweet blend, it offers a mix of caramel biscuit, fresh vanilla pods and clean coconut on the nose. And you’ll taste almonds, toasted hazelnuts, rich fudge, cinnamon custard and liqueur chocolates. Part of its unique profile comes from the cask selection and type, including a mix of toasted oak casks.

All three Blended Malts from J.G. Thomson, the tastemakers, are exceptional and now is the chance to sample them for yourself by taking advantage of the Whisky Magazine offer of a discount of 10% on purchases.
