Laphroaig has launched the second whisky in its Elements range, exploring how different production techniques affect its iconic Islay malts.
Elements 2.0 is designed to demonstrate the effect of longer maturations. Rather than its usual 55-hour fermentations, the spirit used was created from a number of longer maturations, ranging up to 115 hours in length. The distillery team say the adapted fermentations have generated a much fruitier spirit, but one that retains Laphroaig's characteristic peat-smoke notes.
It follows the launch of Elements 1.0 in October 2023, which used a mixture of cloudy and semi-cloudy wort created from a mash of all-Islay barley.
Laphroaig distillery manager Barry MacAffer said: “Our Laphroaig Elements Series is all about blending years of traditional whisky making with new, progressive techniques. There’s no whisky that encapsulates Islay quite like Laphroaig, but this hasn’t stopped us experimenting in a way that preserves our iconic character.
“Laphroaig Elements 2.0 is an unexpected fruitier whisky with the same peaty character you’ve come to know and love — made possible by over double the typical fermentation period. I’m keen to hear what our Friends think of this whisky, which follows in the successful footsteps of Elements 1.0.”
Laphroaig Elements 2.0 will be available to purchase from 3 June from specialist retailers including the Whisky Exchange, the Whisky Shop, and Master of Malt, with a recommended price of £170.
