Farm-to-cask distillery Lochlea has revealed its latest whisky. Cask Strength Batch 3 is the third in the distillery's annual series of cask-strength releases.
The new bottling marks the first time the distillery has combined spirit matured in a combination of oloroso sherry and ex-Islay peated whisky casks. The creation was led by master blender Jill Boyd, who joined the distillery in 2024, and led the selection and blending of this bottling "from start to finish", a "significant milestone" in her first year at Lochlea.
Boyd commented: “I am especially proud of Cask Strength Batch 3 as it has been my first opportunity to curate one of our whiskies from concept to bottle, putting my own mark on our range. I wanted to push the boundaries of our house style with something bold and different.
“As many whisky lovers will know, sherry and peat are both hugely popular flavour profiles, and we saw an opportunity to bring them together in a way that feels fresh and bold, yet rooted in our distillery’s DNA. It’s complex, it’s warming, and it’s got a smoky twist making it the perfect dram to enjoy with a BBQ in the sunshine!”
Lochlea says Batch 3 has notes of red fruits and barbecue smoke, with cherries, molasses, ginger cake, and toasted rye, with floral red roses at the finish.
The release follows Cask Strength Batch 2, which combined Pedro Ximénez, oloroso, and STR (shaved, toasted, recharred) casks, and Batch 1, which was matured in first-fill bourbon and oloroso sherry casks.
Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 3 (59.8% ABV, RRP £67) is available from 29 May 2025 via selected retailers.
