Islay whisky producer Mac-Talla has revealed its newest expression. Flora will join the brand’s core range of single malt whiskies.
Mac-Talla uses its range to explore the diversity in Islay whisky. Through Flora, the Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers brand pays tribute to Islay’s “botanical richness”, complementing the other expressions in the range: Terra, inspired by the earth; Mara, a “seaside dram”; and Strata, which nods to the rocks of Islay.
For the Flora expression, Mac-Talla aged lightly-peated single malt in bourbon barrels, second-fill sherry casks, and a small number of first-fill oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks.
“The sherry/bourbon ration is approximately 70/30,” explained operations director Graeme Mackeddie. “It is vatted together and returned to second-fill sherry butts to marry for a number of months before bottling.
“The result is an elegant dram, which perfectly balances delicate floral notes of heather and gorse with Atlantic sea salt and warming peat.”
Earlier this year, Mac-Talla revealed a rum cask whisky in celebration of Fèis Ìle, hand-selected by Mackeddie for the occasion.
Mac-Talla Flora (48.2% ABV) is available now from selected retailers at RRP £54.
