The company, based in Stowmarket, Suffolk, plans to mark the milestone with events including the planting of a new woodland area, and an Olympic torch-style event that will see a Muntons flag travel around the world to be signed by colleagues.
Muntons was founded in Bedford in 1921 by Munton Baker-Munton to supply malt extract to the brewing and food industries. For Baker-Munton, it was a break away from the family business of malt and grain trading, which they had been involved in since the 1800s.
Due to the prevalence of malt in the food and beverage industry - from beer and whisky to breads and cakes - Muntons says that adaptability and innovation have been at the heart of its operations since day one.
Today, Muntons is a well-known name in the British malt and malted ingredients industry and supplies products to global food and drinks brands. Besides its Suffolk headquarters, it has two further sites in Yorkshire: a second maltings in Bridlington, and a peating malt plant in Tithe Top. It exports to more than 90 countries and has offices in Singapore and the Netherlands, a plant in Thailand, and a sales operation in the USA.
Over the past few decades Muntons has placed increasing emphasis on making its operations sustainable. The most recent project in this vein is the construction of a bio-energy plant at its Cedars Maltings in Stowmarket, which will cut the site's carbon emissions by at least 50 per cent and allow the site to meet its own heating needs. It is the second bio-energy facility the business has invested in; the first, at its Flamborough Maltings in Bridlington, began operating in 2019.
On the 100th anniversary, Muntons' managing director Mark Tyldesley said: "To be going strong for 100 years is an achievement that all of us at Muntons are incredibly proud of. Supporting customers with the creation of some of the world's favourite food and drink for a century is an honour and underlines how passionate we are about malt.
"Our team members play a huge role in the strength of our business. We're fortunate to have some of the best experts in the industry, some of whom have been with us for over 40 years. These colleagues ensure they pass this knowledge down to the next generation of malt specialists.
"It means a great deal to all of us to be a much-trusted maltster both in the UK and abroad."
