Slanj Spirits has announced the release of Slanj whisky, a new blended malt with the intention of challenging tradition.
The blend is crafted from 70 per cent Speyside single malt matured in sherry casks, and 30 per cent Highland single malt matured in bourbon casks. Bottled at 46% ABV, producers have described the expression as having a smooth and rounded flavour profile with fruit notes, subtle sweetness and a gentle spice.
The whisky is the brainchild of three long-time friends — founders of Slanj kilts Brian and Craig Halley, and Stuart Montgomerie, who has long dreamed of launching a Scotch. The Slanj whisky name — derived from the Scottish toast slàinte — has been secured for nearly 10 years, with the team waiting patiently for the right moment.
“Scotch doesn’t need to be sacred to be exceptional,” said Brian Halley, founder of Slanj Spirits. “We’ve always loved the craft, but we wanted to create something that felt less like a ritual and more like a moment. Something people could enjoy instinctively, without second- guessing how to drink it.”
To bring their vision to life, the founders enlisted the help of Douglas Laing & Co, one of Scotland’s best-known independent bottlers and blenders.
One of the brand’s most recognisable investors is Game of Thrones actor Rory McCann. McCann is a long-time whisky admirer, and was closely involved in the final blending and development process helping to ensure the resulting liquid matched the ethos.
McCann said: “I’ve always loved whisky, but Slanj hits different. It’s smooth, no smoke, no fuss — just a bold, easy-going dram anyone can enjoy. I’m proud to back a whisky that’s pure Scottish spirit, without the rules. It’s the ultimate Scottish toast to the world.”
Slanj is launching in the UK with future ambition to roll out internationally, with exploration of future releases already underway. Priced at £48, the whisky can be purchased here.
