Ireland’s Powerscourt Distillery has announced the release of a new blended whisky, Fercullen Falls.

The expression is a 50/50 blend of malt whiskey, which has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, and grain whiskey, which was aged in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and heavily charred new oak casks.

It is bottled at 43% ABV, slightly higher than Fercullen’s core-range blended whiskey, and is designed to act as a flavourful base for cocktails as well as being enjoyed neat. Head distiller and blender Paul Corbett said: “The 50 per cent malt content in the blend adds to the complexity and depth of flavour, which is very different to what other blended Irish whiskeys are offering.”

Powerscourt Distillery’s head of whiskey, John Cashman, added: “With this release, Powerscourt is heralding the start of a new era for the distillery with the inclusion of malt whiskey distilled right here in Powerscourt. As a proud Wicklow man, it is wonderful to be part of the first (legal!) whiskey distilled in Wicklow in over a hundred years. The team has worked very hard to develop and deliver Fercullen Falls Blended Irish Whiskey and we are very pleased with the results.”

Fercullen Falls is available nationwide, retailing at €38 (£33).

Located in County Wicklow, Powerscourt Distillery takes its name from Ireland’s highest waterfall. It began producing spirit in June 2018. The distillery’s Fercullen range now includes an eight-year-old blended whiskey, the 10 Years Old Single Grain Whiskey, and 14-year-old and 18-year-old single malts.
