Scotch whisky maker Glenfiddich has unveiled the latest addition to its Grand Series: the Grande Couronne 26 Years Old.
A blend of liquids from Scotland and France, the expression has been matured in American and European oak casks at the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown before an extended finish of up to two years in French Cognac casks.
It is the newest member of the Grand Series, a collection of opulent single malts which includes Glenfiddich Grand Cru, finished in French cuvée oak casks after a 23-year maturation in American and European oak, and Glenfiddich Gran Reserva, aged for 21 years in ex-Bourbon casks before a final stint in Caribbean rum casks.
Tasting notes for the Grande Couronne, supplied by Glenfiddich, say to expect toasty oak sweetness and notes of French patisserie on the nose, a smooth and indulgently sweet palate, and a long-lasting, sweet oak finish.
Glenfiddich malt master Brian Kinsman said: "The Grand Series perfectly encapsulates Glenfiddich’s spirit of innovation and our ability to experiment with aged liquid and intriguing finishes. Grande Couronne is the latest to exemplify that approach.
"It is the only Glenfiddich single malt that has matured in American and European oak casks and finished in rare French Cognac casks. The length of the finish, two years, is highly unusual and adds extra layers of sweet toasted oak and velvety aromas of café crème, brown sugar and soft spice."
The bottle and packaging of the Grande Couronne are adorned with ornamental gold filigree, while the inside of the box is decorated with artwork styled on Renaissance-era paintings.
The new expression was officially launched on social media platform Clubhouse in an event which was hosted by Raven Smith and featured a discussion on all things whisky with Paddle 8 founder Hikari Yokoyama, Soho House curator Kate Bryan and Glenfiddich ambassadors.
Glenfiddich’s Grande Couronne (43.8% ABV) is available from 24 March 2021 from Harrods, The Whisky Shop, Master of Malt and The Whisky World (RRP £450 for a 70cl bottle).
