Peter Ranscombe

Peter Ranscombe is an award-winning Scottish freelance journalist and copywriter. He won a Wincott Award — billed as the UK’s equivalent of the Pulitzers — in 2023, and during the same year was named business writer of the year at the Highlands & Islands Media Awards, both for his freelance work in The Press & Journal newspaper. As well as writing for Whisky Magazine, he pens articles for Decanter and Club Oenologique. He served as Scottish Field magazine’s wine columnist and drinks blogger between 2014 and 2022, and completed his diploma from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in 2015.

When he’s not writing about drinks, Peter is also Scottish Field’s personal finance columnist and contributes to publications including The Lancet’s specialist medical journals and The Times newspaper. His copywriting spans food and drink, technology and innovation, renewable energy, and life sciences, and he also delivers media training for businesses, universities, and public sector bodies with David Lee Media & Events. He studied physics at the University of St Andrews and trained as a journalist at Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde universities, before spending nine years at The Scotsman newspaper. His debut novel, a historical thriller called Hare, was published by Knox Robinson.
