Nose
Initially old style Californian chardonnay, all butter, nut and wood, then the smoke starts and with water becomes pretty firm and severe.
Palate
Robust, firm, quite alcoholic, powerful. A nodule of sweetness in the middle.
Finish
Dry and austere.
Comment
Port Ellen has always struck me as the most Calvinist of Islay's malts.
